‘Oppenheimer’ sparks social media controversy over sex scene featuring Sanskrit scripture

New Delhi, July 23
A part of the movie “Oppenheimer” made some people on social media upset. In this scene, the main character seems to be having sex while saying verses from an old Sanskrit book. These people on social media said the lines are from the Bhagavad Gita and wanted the scene taken out of Christopher Nolan’s new film.
A movie called “Oppenheimer” about an American physicist has been released in India. It is a long drama that lasts for 180 minutes. The movie has received positive reviews and has made around Rs 30 crore at the box office in just two days.
Uday Mahurkar, who is in charge of providing information for the government of India, wrote a letter to Nolan expressing concern about a scene that he felt was disrespectful to Hinduism. Mahurkar asked the director to remove the scene from the movie everywhere.
We request, representing one billion Hindus and their long-standing tradition of being influenced by the respected book Geeta, that you take all necessary steps to maintain the honor of their sacred book and remove this scene from your film everywhere in the world. If you don’t pay attention to this request, it will be seen as a purposeful attack on Indian culture. Can’t wait for the necessary action to be taken.
Jis a person. Robert Oppenheimer, who was known as the ‘father of the atom bomb,’ studied Sanskrit and it is said that he was influenced by the Bhagavad Gita. During an interview, the physicist remembered that after he saw the first nuclear bomb explode in 1945, he thought of a line from an old Hindu text that said, “Now I have become Death, the one who destroys the world. ” In the movie, the character based on Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, is shown having sex with a psychologist named Jean Tatler, played by Florence Pugh. In the scene, she asks him to read a verse from a book that seems to be in Sanskrit, but we can’t see the title or cover of the book. Tatler made Oppenheimer read a verse she pointed at. The verse goes, “Now, I am Death, who destroys the world. ” It is reported that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) gave the film a rating suitable for viewers above 13 years old, after the studio Universal Pictures removed some scenes to make it shorter.
In the US, the movie is only allowed for people who are 17 and older, unless they have a parent or adult with them. This is the first movie Nolan made for grown-ups.
Mahurkar expressed confusion about how the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) approved the movie with a particular scene. When contacted, CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi and other members of the censor board did not respond immediately.
Some people asked others to stop using “Oppenheimer”.
I recently found out that there is a very disrespectful part in a movie that involves the Bhagavad Gita. I won’t say it again, but it includes something very clear. Some people believe that Hollywood and the West do not always show Hinduism in a good and truthful way.
Hindus are happy about the Bhagwad Gita being mentioned in the Oppenheimer movie. However, they are upset and confused by the clear disrespect Hollywood shows towards the Gita. Talking about sacred verses during sexual activity is seen as discourteous and discriminatory. Another person wrote, “We should protest against Openheimer (sic). ”
Someone said that the scene was not needed.
Christopher Nolan decided to include a part of the Bhagavad Gita in the movie. However, I don’t understand why he chose to show it in this particular scene. I am aware that the book had a significant influence on Oppenheimer, but I believe this scene was not the right place to portray that. One person mentioned that they were choosing to watch a Kannada movie instead of “Oppenheimer” because of the controversy surrounding it.
“Many people said that Oppenheimer is a fantastic movie that is a must-watch. ” But after finding out that people recite the Bhagavad Gita during sex. I changed my mind. I want to watch a Kannada movie now. In Oppenheimer, there is a scene where a naked girl gives the Bhagvat Gita book to Oppenheimer. They read from it while they are having sex. Another tweet said that the scene was very rude.
Murphy said that he read a book called the Bhagavad Gita to get ready for his role in “Oppenheimer. ” He thought the book was really nice and it gave him a lot of inspiration.
Universal Pictures is making a new movie called “Oppenheimer. ” It features famous actors like Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh. The given text contains special characters and tags that cannot be rewritten in simple words.
